May Allah protect.
For thousands of years, talismanic objects have been created and used for protection from harm, healing, good fortune, and guarding against the evil eye—a practice that continues to this day. Before the rise of monotheistic religions, people often believed that idols and figurines could protect them from misfortune. In later periods, many different objects thought to carry positive power were used, and the names and attributes of the Divine were inscribed upon them through symbols and sacred forms.

A closely related tradition can be seen in the “Talismanic Shirts” (Tılsımlı Gömlekler) preserved at Topkapı Palace, which reflect how Ottoman sultans understood faith, prayer, destiny, and spiritual protection. These shirts were believed to shield the wearer from illnesses and all forms of evil, and to bring healing to the sick.

The creation of talismanic shirts required not only technical mastery but also a high level of religious knowledge and symbolic literacy. They were typically prepared by scholars, calligraphers, or individuals with esoteric expertise. The process was often associated with astrological timing, ritual practices, and strict symbolic organization. Qur’anic verses, Asma al-Husna (the Most Beautiful Names), as well as talismanic formulas based on abjad and jafr calculations, were arranged on the garment in a geometric, symmetrical order—each element carrying both visual and spiritual meaning. Traditionally, the writing process was carried out in a state of ritual purity, with intention and prayer; some sources also note that certain shirts were written on specific nights or sacred time periods.

The Topkapı Palace Sultan Garments Collection preserves 87 talismanic shirts. The Esma Vase was designed in inspiration of one of these garments featuring Kufic inscriptions of the names “Muhammad” and “Allah.”

Crafted from handmade purple glass, the Esma Vase is meticulously finished by hand: all raised relief motifs are decorated using 24-carat gold and glass paints, showcasing refined craftsmanship and spiritual heritage.
