Built in the 16th century in the name of Sultan Selim II, the Selimiye Mosque and Complex in Edirne—once the Ottoman capital before the conquest of Istanbul—stands as the city’s most monumental landmark and a masterpiece that crowns its skyline. With its monumental dome and arches, refined painted decorations (kalem işi), marble-paved courtyard, manuscript library, educational institutions, outer courtyard and bazaar (arasta), Selimiye represents the pinnacle of an artistic and architectural tradition.

Among the most powerful elements enhancing Selimiye’s aesthetic and spiritual presence is its calligraphy, applied with exceptional care in what Mimar Sinan described as his masterpiece. The monumental inscriptions within the mosque were written by Hasan Çelebi in Jali Thuluth (Celi Sülüs) script, featuring Qur’anic verses, prayers, and the Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah.

On the Selimiye Sugar Bowl, the decoration is inspired by the calligraphic program of the mosque’s main dome. Surrounding the central inscription of Surah Al-Ikhlas, eight şemse-shaped medallion fields are arranged—reflecting the original layout—where the Beautiful Attributes of Allah are rendered in Jali script using the traditional white-on-brown kalem işi technique. The dome inscriptions emphasize the oneness and greatness of Allah, transforming sacred text into architectural harmony.

The Selimiye Sugar Bowl is crafted from handmade glass, and all raised relief motifs are meticulously hand-decorated using gilding and antique-effect paints, showcasing refined artisanal craftsmanship.
