The solar-year-based calendar was first adopted by the Ancient Egyptians, later developed by the Greeks and Romans, and structured into the Julian Calendar during the time of Julius Caesar. The calendar used today is commonly known as the Gregorian Calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII. First adopted in Rome and across Europe, it later spread worldwide. This system defines one year as the Earth’s revolution around the sun—365 days and 6 hours—with the remaining hours accumulating into an extra day every four years, added to February. Such years are known as leap years.

The Centennial Calendar is designed to be read by aligning the year and month into parallel positions. Its rotating inner disc is engineered as a movable mechanism enabling the selection of both year and month. For years marked with a special sign, the corresponding marked months—applicable for January and February—are selected to obtain the correct date information.

Covering the period from 2000 to 2100, the Centennial Calendar also allows retrospective review, making it both a functional and sustainable object and a lasting gift.
