In the Ottoman era, inlay craftsmanship - alongside mother-of-pearl artistry —was considered an essential part of architectural and artistic training. Under the patronage of the palace, masters worked with extraordinary precision using demanding materials such as mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, ivory, and ebony, creating objects of remarkable refinement.

Across the Ottoman Empire, mother-of-pearl inlay adorned palaces, pavilions, waterfront mansions, mosques, thrones, tables, walls, jewelry boxes, Qur’an cases, lecterns, pulpits, mirrors, weapons, swords, calligraphy boxes, doors, and windows—becoming a vibrant artistic voice within the cultural landscape.

Inspired by the patterns of a Qur’an case recorded in the inventory of the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, the Sedefkâri Vase reinterprets this heritage through glass. Crafted from handmade caramel-colored glass, the piece features raised reliefs mother-of-pearl-toned through the enamel technique (mine) and finished with gold gilding, meticulously executed entirely by hand.
