Rooted in the very idea of gold (zeheb), tezhip—literally meaning “to gild”—first emerged as the closest companion of calligraphy, taking on the role of ornamentation. Nurtured under the patronage of the Ottoman court and elevated through the mastery of palace illuminators (nakkaşlar), tezhip became one of the crowning disciplines of the decorative arts—embracing not only embellishment and ornamentation, but also influencing textile and surface arts. Over time, it came to signify both the Islamic tradition of manuscript illumination and a cornerstone of Ottoman ornamental heritage.
As one of the most refined signatures of artisanal craftsmanship—difficult, rich, and exquisitely delicate—tezhip stylized countless floral forms with creativity and devotion: roses, narcissus, tulips, hyacinths, irises, haseki küpesi, and the blossoms of spring. Beyond its iconic palette of gold and deep blue, it embraced a vast spectrum of tones—orange, green, cherry, pink, yellow, violet, black, and endless variations in between.
Its repertoire welcomed many schools and motifs: stylized botanical forms (hatayi / nebati), penç, rosebuds, animal-inspired ornaments, rumi scrollwork, and numerous other classical designs. Tezhip brought a sense of calm and clarity—inviting the viewer to contemplate both nature and the artist’s hand—while always giving precedence to the sacred text itself.
For centuries, tezhip adorned the Qur’an manuscripts, calligraphic panels, firmans and tughras, bookbindings, miniatures, chests and boxes—creating masterpieces of mature elegance without ever competing with the message of the text. Its beauty also extended into ceremonial and protective objects such as talismanic shirts, tent poles, weapon cases, and quivers.
With its interpretation of classical illumination motifs applied onto a traditional vase form, this piece is crafted from handmade glass. All raised relief patterns are meticulously hand-decorated using gold gilding, presented with exceptional hand craftsmanship.
