Located in the Divrigi district of Sivas, the Divrigi Great Mosque was commissioned in 1228 during the period of the Mengucekid Principality, under the Anatolian Seljuk realm. It was built by Ahmet Sah, the ruler of Mengucek, and his wife Turan Melek, and executed by the architect Hurrem Sah, son of Mugis, originally from Ahlat.
Comprising a mosque with a two-domed mausoleum and an adjoining hospital the Divrigi Great Mosque and Hospital is considered a masterpiece not only for its architecture but also for its exceptional examples of traditional Anatolian stone craftsmanship. The monument displays some of the rarest and most accomplished stonework, created by master craftsmen from Ahlat and Tiflis. While the structure may appear symmetrical from afar, its ornamentation is intentionally asymmetrical, featuring an extraordinary variety of motifs that do not repeat.
The entrance portal of the hospital section is known as the Monumental Portal. Within its inner tympanum, pentagonal and octagonal star motifs symbolizing Seljuk aesthetics are prominently featured. The pillar dividing the window into two is known as the Balance Column. A total of three balance columns were placed across the complex - one at the hospital portal and two at the Western Portal of the mosque - serving as a symbolic and structural indication of whether the mosque and hospital remained in balance. After the 1939 Erzincan earthquake, these columns lost their rotating function.
The shadow cast by the Balance Column onto the interior wall also functions as a sundial, adding a remarkable layer of architectural intelligence to this monument.
The motifs of the Divrigi Bowl are inspired by the ornaments on the Monumental Portal of the hospital section of the Divrigi Great Mosque. The Divrigi Great Mosque and Hospital was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
Crafted from handmade cream opal glass, the Bowl features raised relief motifs meticulously hand-decorated using 24-carat gold and antique-effect paints, showcasing exceptional artisanal craftsmanship.
