Known as Tenedos in antiquity, the island of Bozcaada has a history dating back to 3000 BC and has witnessed continuous settlement from ancient times to the present day. On Tenedos, the minting of silver coins began in the second half of the 6th century BC.

On the obverse of these coins, the principal motif is a double-faced head, typically depicted as two profiles—one female and one male. On the reverse, the imagery features a double-axe motif along with the city’s name, appearing as TENE, and in later examples as TENEZION. The double-faced head on the front is believed to relate to the island’s mythological narrative, and is often associated with King Tenes of Tenedos and his sister Hemithea, who—according to the legend—were falsely accused by their father and left to die.

The reverse motif, the double axe, depicted together with a cluster of grapes, symbolizes justice.

Inspired by the double-faced portraits found on Tenedos coins, the vase is produced in a sculptural dual-profile form using an injection molding shaping technique. On the glass surface, key motifs from Tenedos silver coins dated to the 2nd century BC are reimagined: the wreath ornament, the opposing profiles of Tenes and Hemithea, and the double-axe symbol placed within the wreath.

The Tenedos Vase is crafted from handmade glass using the injection molding shaping method, and all decorative motifs are meticulously hand-applied using 24-carat gold gilding, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and a powerful archaeological narrative.
